Frank WHITE and Martha DICKSON, she is daughter of Mary and Peter. Richard and Ann Lashbrook had 12 children that survived. I have a lot of info, willing to share. New research information as of 5⁄1⁄2016: Submitted by ">Paul F. Heaton I am writing to you in the hopes that you can help to pass along some information to one of the local McHenry County residents who was using your genealogy site at one point (back in 1998). I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and came across an original insurance policy issued by Franklin Life in 1896, insuring the life of Jacob Dickson, and naming his wife, Caroline Dickson, as beneficiary, from Harvard, Illinois, in McHenry County. As you may know, Franklin Life was a Springfield insurance company that eventually was swallowed up by AIG. There is a curious disconnect between the date of birth listed in the insurance application for the applicant and insured, Jacob Dickson (birth date listed as April 9, 1838), and the age of the insured listed twice in the policy (39 years old). The policy was issued on November 18, 1896, which makes it impossible for a 39-year old insured in 1896 to have been born in 1838. A 39-year old applicant in 1896 would have been born in 1857; conversely, someone born in 1838 would have been 58 years old by 1896 (not 39 years old). I ran Jacob Dickson's name through the web, and came across your McHenry County genealogy site. There is a “query” from one of your users (Carol) seeking information about Jacob Dickson and his wife, Caroline Miller, from McHenry County, during the late 1800's. These names suggest the strong possibility that the query from Carol is about the individuals listed in the insurance policy in my possession, notwithstanding the mystery surrounding the mistaken date of birth and age listed in the policy. (By the way, my working theory is that the insurance agent who sold the policy may have mistakenly listed the age and date of birth of the spouse (Caroline), who was the beneficiary, rather than listing the date of the insured and applicant (Jacob). Then, as now, insurance agents sometimes made mistakes completing applications, although that would have been a particularly egregious mistake for someone to make when completing an insurance policy. My corresponding theory is that the agent (listed as G.P. Eaunick) was new to the business, as only a rookie would make such a mistake. If my theory is correct, that would mean that our Caroline Dickson (nee Miller) was born on 4⁄9⁄1838.) I thought the person using your site might be intrigued by the preceding information, as well as the information that follows, if you can pass it along to them. Since they were seeking information about descendants, the following information in the insurance application might be of interest: Jacob Dickson was a farmer Jacob's father died at the age of 65 due to injuries sustained in a mining accident (according the genealogy inquiry below his father would have been Peter Dickson) Jacob's mother died at the age of 78, due to rheumatism (??) Jacob still had two living brothers at the time of the 1896 insurance application, ages 55 and 48 (if Jacob was actually 58 years old in 1896, this places him in the correct age range with his brothers) Jacob still had two living sisters in 1896, ages 54 and 42 Jacob had 2 deceased brothers who died at the ages of 18 and 24, “died in the army.” (Someone born in in the 1830's could have served in the Civil War, or possibly the Mexican-American War, or even both wars.) Jacob had not lost any sisters, so there were a total of two sisters in his family. Jacob's grandparents were all dead by 1896; he had no information about his father's parents, but he reported that both of his maternal grandparents had lived to the age of 90, and then died of “old age.” Jacob listed his good friend George Diggins as a personal reference. Jacob was not a heavy drinker in 1896, but confessed to having hit the bottle a little too often until fairly recently (discovering temperance three years earlier, in 1893) Jacob's doctor at the time was Dr. Mucos. Click here to view Jacob S. and Caroline Dickson gravestone photo as shown in the Cemetery Photographs topic. |
